Balletto di Roma launches Light on Dance
June / July 2019

Balletto di Roma with Light On Dance project intends to promote contemporary research by inviting young artists – choreographers, dancers and directors who work in the field of dance (in all its forms, genres and expressions), theater-dance, performing arts and the contemporary circus – to propose multidisciplinary projects in which the different arts merge and dialogue with each other, or that use new technologies and digital languages.
During June and July, at the Villa Pamphilj Theater in Rome, 6 candidates (Michal Rynia / Nastja Bremec, Federica Esposito, Anastasia Brouzioti, Nyko Piscopo, Alina Belyagina, Shinohe Kenji) selected from a list of over 30 proposals from all over the world – all attributable to young artists but already capable of competing with an ensemble of professionals – had the opportunity to conduct a training session with some elements of the Compagnia del Balletto di Roma; subsequently they presented the extract of a repertoire work, an example of their own choreographic style and / or their own creative figure.
The extreme diversity and heterogeneity of the proposals, which came to life in the indoor and outdoor space of one of the most beautiful historic “ville” in Rome, allowed for an all-round evaluation of the candidates, thanks to an open look to welcome even very visions far from each other.

The third step of Light on dance has instead provided for the request, from the direction of Balletto di Roma, to only two finalist candidates to elaborate an original artistic project (which has never debuted either in the form of a study or in complete form ).

Balletto di Roma awarded Nastja Bremec and Mychal Rynia (founders and choreographers of MN Dance Company, from Slovenia) the win of the first edition of Light On Dance. The duo will create a new creation with the Balletto di Roma’s dancers which will debut in 2020, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Company.
Balletto di Roma with Light on dance becomes an incubator of new creativity and promoter of initiatives aimed at supporting and enhancing still little-known artistic realities, favoring their production, becoming a link between tradition and the gaze towards the contemporary.
In occasion of the Aprile in Danza event at the Teatro Palladium, Balletto di Roma will present the outcome of the Light on Dance final phase with the debut of the creation signed by Bremec and Rynia.
Together with the winners, the direction of Balletto di Roma decided to award 3 special mentions to 3 participants: Federica Esposito, Nyko Piscopo and Leopoldo Guadagno.
The three choreographers will be involved as guest teacher and choreographer in the workshops within Inside Out Contemporary Dance, the 3rd edition of the showcase organized by Balletto di Roma and part of Contemporaneamente Roma 2019 program promoted by Roma Capitale – Department of Cultural Growth and made in collaboration with SIAE. The event is sponsored by Municipio XIII Roma Aurelio.
Light on dance, an entirely new experience in the context of Balletto di Roma, has allowed us to shed light on dance by providing young dance authors with different opportunities for creating and elaborating creative dance.
